Who are the Coaches?
All of our coaches are experienced players who are also certified through the USA Volleyball Coaching Accreditation Program (USAV-CAP). At the Arroyo Volleyball Club, we strive to maintain a 1:6 player/coach ratio on every team at every level.
David L. Spence
15 & 16's Division Head Coach
Head of Player and Coach Development
16-Blue Head Coach
David Spence is in his 3rd season coaching with the Arroyo
Volleyball Club. He moves up with his eldest daughter to the 16
and under division after leading the 14 and under division for
Arroyo the last two years. David has over 20 years coaching
experience at the te and club levels. He is also a volleyball
player having played at the Collegiate, National and International
level. David is a Captain/Paramedic for the Los Angeles Fire
Department and a married father of three.
Kelly Tate
12's Division Head Coach
12-Blue Head Coach
Kelly Tate has been coaching for Arroyo Volleyball Club for 5
years now. She is one of our 12 and under coaches as well as the
12 and under division head. Kelly started playing volleyball in
elementary school, then picking it up again as a freshman in high
school. Raised in South Mission Beach, California, she attended
Mission Bay High School, where she was coached by the head
coach of San Diego Volleyball Club, Dave Whittaker. Kelly also
played for San Diego Volleyball throughout her high school years
and as a senior was given the MVP award. After high school
she attended San Diego Mesa where she played for two years and
then was recruited by San Francisco State University. Kelly is a
mother of four, a wife, and a stay at home mom. She has attended
several coaching clinics and is also CAP 1 certified. She is a
dedicated coach, who is always looking for ways to better
her coaching abilities.
Charles Min
14-Blue Head Coach/ 18-Blue Head Coach
Charles Min begins his 2nd season with Arroyo. Last year he
coached the 12 and under - Blue Team. He is currently in his 3rd
year as the Girls' Head Coach at Hoover High School in Glendale.
He began coaching at Indiana Wesleyan University as an
Assistant Coach / Setting Coach from (1993 –1996). He also planned
and conducted practices while also handling recruiting and
scholarships. (He recruited players that would eventually win the
National Title for the NCCAA.) While assisting with the IWU
team, he also coached for a 1st year club, Marion Juniors
(1995-1998). There he coached various levels, including the 16's
team from last to first place in a year (Logansport League). He
went on to assist the varsity program at the nearby Marion High
School (1994-1996), winning back-to-back Sectional titles in
'94 and '95. In 1998, he was named head coach at Lakeview
Christian School. At Lakeview he took the 6th smallest
school in Indiana to their first Sectional Title match in school
history. After graduating he left Indiana and was a volunteer
coach at Hoover High School. In 2004, he was named Head Coach of
the girls program, and also assists with the boys' program. Most
recently, Charles coached with the SCVA High Performance Team;
working with the Select Team Blue. There they competed against
teams from all around the nation at the High Performance
Championships held in Florida. Also during the summer,
Charles returned as a head coach with Mick Haley's USC
Volleyball camp (2nd Year). He also coached with Gold Medalist,
Pat Powers at his VB Clinics in Anaheim. As a player, Charles
played with Hoover High School in Glendale. During his
college years, since his school did not have a Men's program, he
competed in various tournaments including USA volleyball
tournaments (Open Division). Charles graduated with a B.A. in
Economics and Business administration
from Indiana Wesleyan University.
John Gibson
14-White Head Coach
John Gibson is a third year coach at Arroyo. He started teaching
volleyball in 2002 to help his 6th grade daughter learn to play.
His
daughter, Michelle, is now a Junior in High School and a seasoned
club setter. He has spent many hours learning the game of
volleyball and on teaching methodologies. An admirer of UCLA's
former Basketball coaching great, John Wooden, Coach Gibson
incorporates Coach Wooden's "Pyramid of Success" into his coaching
style. Coach Gibson has also been a volunteer coach at the Boys
and Girls Clubs of Pasadena where he worked with girls ages 10-13.
Additionally, Coach Gibson worked as a volunteer assistant coach
at Herbert Hoover High School in Glendale. Coach Gibson also holds
a Black Belt in Hapkido, was a professional dancer and continues
to be active dancing, coaching, playing recreational volleyball
and spending time with his lovely daughter, Michelle.
Ta'ase Mose
14- Red Head Coach
Ta'ase Mose is in his 2nd year at Arroyo Volleyball Club. Last
year he completed a successful season coaching the Arroyo 14-Blue
team. He was born and raised in Western Samoa and moved to the
U.S. in 1998. He attended John Muir High School in Pasadena and
started playing volleyball in his first year at Pasadena City
College. He played one year club at PCC under Lori Jensen. He has
also played co-ed volleyball leagues where he has taken first
place and is currently playing in his third season. He has also
attended several coaching clinics seeking ways to integrate new
methodologies into his coaching practices.
Steven W. Fong
16 Red Head Coach
Steven Fong has been coaching for arroyo for one year. Previously
an assistant for last years 15s, he is now in his second year as
head coach for the 16 Red. Currently, he is also the head coach
for the varsity program at his alma mater John Marshall High
school located in Los Feliz. Previously, he was Junior Varsity
Head Coach with a 10-2 record that allowed his team to make the
Junior Varsity playoffs. As a freshman in high school, Steven's
passion for the game was ignited by Silverlake Volleyball Clubs
coach and 3-time AAA-CIF City Champion, Coach Margaret Donatella.
In his sophomore year Steven led his team as the starting setter
to win the 1996 AAA-CIF City Championship. Steven has played at
the collegiate level 2 years at Santa Monica City College coached
under Rick McLaughlin and Mark Lee. He continues his passion to
play in various leagues and open gyms around the Los Angeles area.
With an open mind he hopes that his passion for volleyball will be
a gift to those he coaches.
Jenn Vo
18-White Head Coach
Jennifer Vo will be starting her 2nd year coaching for Arroyo
Volleyball Club. Last year she was an assistant coach for the
14-Red Team. Jennifer was first introduced to volleyball in
the 5th grade. At the age of 15, Jennifer Vo, got her first
volleyball opportunity on the Rosemead High School Junior Varsity
Team. She was born and raised in the San Gabriel Valley where she
currently resides. A year later, she was promoted up to the
Varsity level and was their starting setter during her senior
year. Upon graduating high school, Jennifer attended Pasadena City
College
where she once again took over their starting setter position for
thenext two years. Jennifer continues playing in various advanced
co-ed volleyball leagues. Currently, she is on her second year
coaching for the Arroyo Volleyball Club and will head the 18 years
and under program.
Paul Kim
16 - Black Head Coach
Paul is in his first year with Arroyo Volleyball Club. He has been
coaching the 7/8 volleyball program at La Canada High School for
the past 5 years. Prior to that he has coached at all levels at
the high school level. He has been coaching for 9 years. During
the summer he assists running a summer volleyball camp, Foothill
Volleyball Camp, for kids under the age of 13. As a player, Paul
played for Herbert Hoover High School in Glendale. While attending
UC Riverside, he played intramural volleyball and won 2 titles.
Paul is an 8th grade math teacher at La Canada High School.
Jeff Thai
18-White Assistant Coach
Jeff Thai is in his first year with the Arroyo Volleyball Club and
will
head the 18's division alongside Jennifer Vo. At the age of 29, he
brings with him 10 years of high school coaching experience. Six
years of successful high school varsity teams include six years of
varsity, one league championship, and three CIF appearances. He
coached numerous players that went on to have successful careers
in collegiate competitions. Player of Coach Thai went on to
schools which include San Jose State and Arizona State. He is
currently playing on a few Co-Ed tournament teams and also runs a
family business.
